ALENE HOLLOWAY REGISTERED NURSING STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP
(Sparta, IL) – The Health and Wellness Foundation of Sparta Community Hospital is thrilled to announce a new scholarship opportunity for employees of Sparta Community Hospital District.
In honor of her 90th birthday, the family of Alene Holloway, RN, has established a recurring scholarship to aid in the education of healthcare workers seeking to become Registered Nurses. Holloway, a retired nurse served Sparta Community Hospital District for nearly 30 years, first, as a registered nurse and later a member of the Board of Directors. Mrs. Holloway has dedicated her life to supporting the work of our local hospital and the education of aspiring healthcare workers.
In recognition of her love and dedication to the profession, her family has chosen to honor her by providing this scholarship to a worthy candidate. “My siblings and I are thankful to honor our mother, Alene Holloway, with this annual nursing scholarship to a registered nurse student that shares her passion for nursing and her love for Sparta Community Hospital,” shares daughter, Julie Holloway-Hirz.
Alene’s interest in nursing began in 1952, as she served as a “candy-striper” at Sparta Hospital, working the 3pm-11pm shift, 4 days a week! From this early interest, her work evolved to the point of seeking her nursing degree from the Burnham School of Nursing in Champaign, IL, where she graduated in 1954. In 1977 Alene retired from Sparta Community Hospital but returned to nursing in the field of Occupational Health serving the mine industry at Captain Mine.
During those days, Alene’s heart was always back at Sparta Community Hospital where she served on the Board of Directors of the District Hospital as well as the Health and Wellness Foundation Board of Directors. It is through her work at the hospital that she has witnessed first-hand the hospital’s progress and growth as well as the positive impact that Sparta Community Hospital has on the local community.
The Health and Wellness Foundation of Sparta Community Hospital District supports the work of the Hospital in a variety of ways and encourages the support of the community by raising awareness of the educational needs of our future young healthcare professionals.
